They dont need to be big, ugly or spoil your work. But watermarks mean your art is traceable back to the source. Thats YOU.
Your rights as the creator are important. Make sure credit is given where credit is due - Watermark your art with your contact details.
If a viewer respects your hard work, they'll respect your need to watermark that work. Don't be bullied by those who say copyright text or watermarks spoil images. They are easy to integrate into pictures, and done right do not detract from the art. Dont be bullied; be proud to put your stamp on your work!
I put my watermark on EVERYTHING. Big thanks for the stamp- I'll use it!
Yeah, it's hard to make the watermark noticeable but not distracting... which is why mine is usually the same colour as the drawing, or very transparent.

Middle of the piece = good sometimes. If it's off to the side and not integrated into the picture itself, it's easy to crop out/erase/etc.
But if it's really huge and distracting, then there is a problem. Although it's all a matter of opinion, and in the end it's really up to the artist. If they've been stolen from multiple times in the past, then I could see why they'd do it. But like I said--matter of opinion, as well. I've seen people complain of watermarks that, yes, were in the center of the pic, but were not distracting at all unless you were just looking for something to gripe about. So it all just depends.

Namely that a watermark does NOT have to be this huge, distracting scrawl across the middle of the piece. >.>
Other than that, nice stamp.
